I have a thing for bridges. Especially old bridges. Today we drove out to what felt like the middle of nowhere to visit a bridge. It sounds quite silly when you say it aloud or see in in print, but there it is. This bridge is very picturesque.
The Historic Gillespie Dam Bridge is located on old Highway 80 crossing over the Gila River. There is not any information at the site regarding the history of the bridge and dam, but after a search online I found that the dam was constructed in the 1920s, but flooding in the 1993s caused a partial collapse. The bridge was completed in 1927. It is a steel bridge and one of the longest bridges in the state of Arizona. An article in the Phoenix New Times describes how the area is now home to wildlife. There is also information and historical picture on the Gila Bend Chamber of Commerce website.
