New Year, Clean Slate
Well, it’s a new year and everyone has a clean slate. After deviating from my regular eating and exercising patterns I am ready to get back into the swing of things. Once diagnosed with Hashimotos I decided to seek out additional help from a naturopathic provider.
Frustration with Mainstream Medicine
I quickly became frustrated with the mainstream medical model of medicating symptoms. My desire was to get to the root causes of my symptoms. My understanding and experience with Western medicine with the treatment of Hashimotos is that there is nothing to be done to prevent or correct the destruction of your thyroid and once your thyroid no longer functions properly a person is then placed on medication to treat hypothyroidism. This is a very frustrating experience for any person with any diagnosis.
Here is where I will tell you that I am not giving medical advice and any information provided is for educational purposes. Each person has individual needs that should be discussed with your healthcare provider.
Natural Medicine
I am not ‘anti-medicine’ and I also don’t believe that natural remedies are a cure-all. I believe that there is a place for both. I was fortunate to have a provider to treat me for subclinical hypothyroidism, but I wished to take my care a bit further. On the recommendation of a friend, I sought out care from a practice that specializes in natural medicine. This practice specializes in dietary changes and supplementation to correct deficiencies and optimize health.
The focus in natural medicine is to optimize health to prevent disease and to get to the root cause of symptoms. After a long health assessment and many lab studies, my provider gave me a long list of supplements. The supplementation is just part of the equation. In many ways, it is the easy component of the equation. Another large part- diet. Not diet, as in ways to restrict calories, but diet- what you eat on a daily basis. In the words of my provider “, you can’t out supplement a bad diet” and I’m finding those words to be true.
Changes
So, in true New Years’ style, I am making some drastic changes today and starting a recommended detox. With day one complete, I have 20 days left where I will then transition back to a Paleo diet way of eating.
But, there is much more to Health than just diet. What else makes a person healthy?
