I deactivated my Facebook account over the weekend. This was after minimizing my exposure/ usage over the last two weeks. I didn’t deactivate Instagram, but I deleted the Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram apps off of my phone. I have a Twitter account, but I don’t even know how to use that- so I’m pretty sure that doesn’t count.
Do I feel different? Not really.
I’ve tried to make a conscience effort to be less connected to my phone. To be completely transparent I’m not disconnecting from all social media. I still use Pinterest. I love Pinterest. I love the crafts and creativity. I love searching subjects and finding new blogs. Do I use it too much? Probably.
Remember the days when we would just sit and daydream? You know, before cell phones were permanently affixed to our hands? Do you remember what it was like to be bored? Remember when we talked to each other in the waiting room? Remember when we made eye contact and small talk? Remember when we gave people our undivided attention?
I miss it.
Can we go back? I was teasing my teenager the other day- I told her I was going to get rid of her phone and buy a rotary phone. One with a long cord to get wrapped up in.
No, we can’t go back, but we can take action. Be present. Make eye contact. Smile. Talk to people. Take time to be bored. Daydream.
