Our first Nascar race
We met a couple in our RV park. They are what are called ‘Full timers’, they live in their RV full time. They are probably a little bit younger than us, but saw a wisdom in enjoying life by spending less money on a traditional mortgage. Unlike a lot of full-timers, they do not travel around in their RV, must remain stationary. They choose to do this to keep their expenses low.
Well, this couple scored some free Nascar tickets and shared them with us and a few of our neighbors.
Well, I worked the night before so I opted to take a two-hour nap. In retrospect, I should have foregone the nap, because between the traffic and the miles long trek from the parking lot, we missed the very being of the race. We could hear it from the parking lot.
You can say what you like about the sport, but it is one of the few sports where you will hear the event open in prayer, people will be standing for the national anthem- hats in their hands and hands on their hearts. While I’m not going to get political or be antagonist these are two things that I appreciate.
We may have missed being in the bleachers at the start of the race, but we still were able to see the jets blast across the sky.
Well, we forgot our earplugs. In case you don’t know, it probably seems obvious, it would be near impossible to sit through any part of a Nascar race without earplugs. Saying that it is loud is quite a bit of an understatement. I’m almost willing to bet you’d leave the race with some permanent hearing loss without ear plugs. Of coarse they sell earplugs at the race, but I would have preferred my free ones we left at home.
We finally make it to the stands. Guess what? This turns out to be the hottest day in Arizona since our arrival. There is no shade. at. all. I usually do ok in hot weather as long as I am not working out in the heat, but even I was overheating just sitting. My ginger haired, very fair girl was certain she was dying.
After a while we headed down the stands in search of something cold to drink. I bought both girls snow cones and we sat under the stands in the shade where a lot of others took respite from the penetrating and unrelenting sun. Well, we never made it back to the stands. My husband came looking for us and we decided to head on home.
I was very thankful for the tickets. The experience was very neat, but next time I will certainly be more prepared….. frozen water bottles, cool clothes, the works!
