Well, here we are, about to wrap up a two month visit home. We had no intention of staying home this long, but it’s the way it happened. My next assignment has ended up starting later than I had anticipated.
This has been a great time of rest. I did not get to see everyone I wanted to see while home, I didn’t get to do everything I placed on my list, but I did rest.
Christmas ended up being a stress-free affair that flew by and I’m quite surprised that 2018 is well under way.
Visiting home has kind of been a weird experience. Now that we’ve been traveling and total upended our life it’s weird to be home. In the beginning you have a lot of visits and catching up to do, but as time goes on you’re just sitting there wondering ok- what’s next. We no longer work at home.
I can tell you what we did not expect- Snowpocalypse 2018! I little information for you guys not from the south…. We cannot handle the snow y’all. We are not equipped for it. We have no salt, we have no snow shovels, we have no plows and for heaven’s sake- most of us don’t even own a real coat. It hardly ever snows here. If it does snow here it is maybe an inch, it usually does not stick and it is definitely melted completely by the next day. And everything shuts down. EVERYTHING shuts down. The schools, the government buildings, and the bridges. If you are from here you know to stay home because we don’t know how to drive in the snow and if we pretend we do then there will be accidents, lots of accidents.
Well….. during Snowpocalypse 2018 it snowed. We got eight inches at our house. It has not snowed this much here since 1989, the winter after our famous Hurricane Hugo. And it stuck and it stayed. Our road was a frozen block of ice for five days. Finally on the fifth day I had enough of staying put at home and we ventured out to our Neighborhood Walmart, just a few miles from our house. This is where we named it Snowpocalypse- the shelves were wiped clean as if a hurricane were coming. From then on my husband and I dubbed our snow Snowpocalypse 2018.
Joking aside, it really was a novelty for us. We enjoyed it and really savored the moments knowing that it was a rarity for us. My husband and I took a walk around the block each day, enjoying the scenery of homes, yards and woods covered in white. IT was a bit treacherous, with the roads covered in blocks of ice, to walk around and not fall on your bottom.
All in all it was an enjoyable, if not a little weird, visit home.
