Changing Landscapes
On Thursday morning of our westward trek we woke up in the parking lot of the Walmart in Big Spring, Texas. We started out on I-20 around 8:20 am.
The land is pretty flat with windmills and oil rigs.
These windmills and oil rigs are planted in the middle of farmland and pasture land. I can see the cotton has recently be harvested.
The landscape changes again, gradually. We’ve gone from stubby trees and dry, rough looking grass and small cacti on very flat land filled with small cacti to land that is hilly and mountainous with scrubby grass and bushes. I am not too sure you could call these plants trees.
I see tans- all different shades. Tan colored dirt, light brown grass, dark brown bushes, light, sand-colored mountains and big, beautiful, blue sky. It’s drastically different from South Carolina, but it has it’s own, unique beauty. This is what I was looking for. I wanted to experience new things- new places, peoples, food, landscapes, climates. I want to experience what I’ve seen on tv and read about in books.
The mountains here are different from the ones I am used to – the Mountians of Western North Carolina. The mountains in NC are covered trees and they seem to go on and on. The roads wind through them. The mountains here seem sporadic. They are not covered in trees and look like piles of sand that have been bulldozed into place. Someone I work with referred them as dirt hills.
